Phil and I haven't had a date in several months and even the ones we have had have been no longer than two hours in length because of little miss Ingrid's needs. Well, a week ago there were about a million stars out. So Phil asked me if I wanted to check them out. He made us both some ice cream and we went out to the Jeep. We have a huge sunroof that we rolled back after we reclined our seats. We sat there in the driveway staring up at ten billion stars, faint music in the background. Our girls were both asleep inside the house, and here we were holding hands, caught up in an unexpected romance. It was a surprise date and it was wonderful.
Honestly, this is probably the greatest change in our day-to-day relationship since having kids. We used to be pros and spontaneity - frequently stopping everything and doing something special, together. River drives, coffee dates, dinners out for Mexican food, walks around the neighborhood - these were our foundation. Even when we were dating, we broke free from our schedules to be together. One of my most favorite days, I think the day I realized I loved Phil, was one where we skipped all of our classes and got out of town. We spent the morning at the Big Tree and then explored an orchard. An entire day together. And after we were first married, we did it again. Only this time we put a blanket in the woods, near the bank of the river. We ate fancy meats and cheese and drank cider beer, staring into the sunlight that was peering in through the trees.
You all know that we have tried so hard to continue our adventures with our girls. It's not as easy as it used to be. Naps and bedtimes and breastfeeding somewhat dictate our schedule now. And that's okay, too. :)
Anyway, how do you find spontaneity in your life? How do you work around breastfeeding and sleeping schedules?
